Brighton Art Fair
Audience: 3000+

'Showcasing over 100 contemporary artists across all media Brighton Art Fair 2009 promises once again to be a top quality and exciting visual arts event. Artists exhibit and sell their work direct to the public making the fair a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Quote: "Brighton Art Fair is delighted to welcome Creative Futures for the first time in 2009. This not for profit organisation bridges the community arts and the professional arts sectors providing marginalised artists and writers the opportunity to network, exhibit, publish and sell their work at the highest levels. Creative Futures raises the profile of individual artists / writers and the organisations they access, whilst challenging public stereotypes of marginalised people."

Extract from a review by Colin Hambrook of Disability Arts: "Unleashed embodies the same kind of experience William Blake was talking about in his ‘Auguries of Innocence’ - the ability ‘to see the world in a grain of sand, and to see heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hands, and eternity in an hour.’ It is one of the positive sides to the experience of psychosis."· For the full extract see· http://www.disabilityarts.org/?location_id=1049

choice and control by craig genner copy.jpgNo.14 Jan 09 - ongoing
'Choice & Control', BHCC council offices
Audience: 1000+

Joy Hollister commissioned this informative and enlightening
series of six artworks as a way of bringing the people that the council helps closer to her and her staff.  Artists and writers were asked to create artworks that answered the question 'What does Choice and Control mean in my life?'.  The results were very impressive including this poem by Tom Jayston:

The Pavement Apostle

I reside at the corners of your eyes
Within a grand palace of apathy
I sit, uncomfortably, outside your heart
Wishing its warmth would touch me

I walk amongst your nerves and skin
Unnoticed, a regular type of nothing
I eat your waste products, solid and liquid
To stay alive and hope for better

I pray at your feet for hours every day
And all Gods destroy me with indifference
I reside at the corners of your eyes
But it certainly is not home.

Artist's statement:· I never considered myself artistic or creative - far from it in fact.· However, in 2006, after reading 'The Artist's way' by Julia Cameron, I found myself drawing shapes and becoming interested in colour.· Since then, painting has become an important part of my lifeand a way of doing something productive and enjoyable while coping with a long term illness.· I find myself getting inspiration from Brighton and its' surroundings; the beach, the sea and the Downs.· Being in the outdoors and close to Nature is very important to me.· My family are from Connemara in the West of Ireland, a very beautiful and special palce to me, and I can see influences from there on my work.

Culture24 - 'Visitors to Brighton·on May bank holiday weekend might see a long snaking queue on the seafront - but it won't be for lager, cockles or chips.· Starting on May 24 and running until May 26 the country’s smallest temporary art gallery will take up residence on the pebbles of Brighton beach to showcase the talents of local marginalised artists.· Inspired by the South Bank’s Tate Modern, Tight Modern is a miniature replica of the world famous and iconic building on London’s Thames, measuring just 4ft x 6ft. Entry to the gallery (capacity three or four people - at a push) is free of charge.· Once inside punters will be treated to more than 50 pieces of art produced by people who are homeless, have disability issues or have mental health or substance misuse problems.
