About the course:

How do we write stories that come alive for the reader?

This six-week course will introduce you to the skills you need to write compelling flash fiction. Flash fiction is a term used to refer to the shortest of stories, with a word count of up to 1,000 words. You’ll learn how less is actually more and will be encouraged to play with constraint (flash fiction can get to as few as 100 words or less!) in the space of the shortest of stories where every word must earn its place.

Across six weeks you will learn about the technical aspects of crafting a story and experiment with plot, structure, narrative perspective, language and imagery. You’ll be encouraged to think creatively and find bold and exciting ways of looking at topics and shaping ideas. A range of writing exercises and games, recommended reading and constructive feedback will inspire and provide you with a solid understanding and experience of how to write original and compelling short stories.

There will be a continuous opportunity (but no obligation) to share your writing-in-progress and receive constructive feedback. At the end of the course you will have a clear understanding of the technical aspects of flash fiction writing and come away with a wealth of fresh ideas and new, original writing. You will also take away an array of writing tools to use in your writing beyond the course. Suitable for both new and experienced writers.

About the tutor: 

Rayna Haralambieva is a writer who is fascinated with flash fiction. She finds this short form magical, as it opens up so many possibilities and sees it as a place to play. Her fiction has won several awards and is published in, among others, Reflex Fiction, Litro, Strands and Bath Flash Fiction. Her short story Three Kinds of Tears won the 2023 Creative Future Writers’ Gold Award. She lives in the South of England where she leads creative writing workshops and has a pair of naughty gerbils to distract her from writing.

Who is it for? 

All underrepresented writers—those who face barriers to opportunities due to mental health issues, physical health/disability, sensory impairment, learning disabilities, neurodivergent, substance misuse, survivors, working class backgrounds, and those from the LGBTQIA+ community, Black, Asian, traveller, mixed heritage or other global majority backgrounds.
