Holly Williams

I write mainly in the fantasy genre with an aim towards teenagers and young adults. I am inspired by authors such as Philip Pullman and Neil Gaiman. My first trilogy of books was The Jersey Guardian Trilogy which was about a family of witch hunters descended from Saint Helier who were sworn to protect the isle from Black Magic. This series was followed by Ley Ryders, A more traditional fantasy epic set in the fictional lands of Geoll and Etheria. Ley Ryders is about a Sisterhood of warrior/healer/holy women who devoted themselves to a mystical force called the Ley which is the source of all life and guides people's destinies. The story concerns a young woman named Petronia who feels her destiny is to become a Ryder despite the fact she is unable to speak. Her brother Hayden is wary of allowing her to see where her fate will lead her and together they go on a journey to discover the truth about Petronia's remarkable abilities. As a person with a physical impairment, I enjoy using the traditional conventions of fantasy writing to explore ideas surrounding disability and the challenges it presents. All of my work features characters who have varying degrees of physical abilities and I try to weave the unique problems and prejudices they face organically into wider stories of adventure and intrigue. As well as my novels, I write poems, one of which has been recently published in Poems for a Pandemic. I also keep a weekly online blog in which I discuss issues around disability, mental health and current affairs as well as reviewing films and theatre. I also enjoy drawing in my spare time, mainly portraits and cartoons.
