Flash Fiction (Online)

About the course:

Flash fiction is usually described as a story that’s complete in under 1,000 words, but can be even shorter. However, successful flash isn’t just about word count, it’s also about using word choice and structure to create a satisfying piece of prose in which every word counts.

In these workshops, we’ll use story examples and writing exercises to think about what makes a successful flash fiction, and what those techniques can do to shape your writing in general.

About the tutor:

Anita Goveas is British-Asian, and fuelled by hazelnut cappuccinos and paneer jalfrezi. She was first published in the 2016 London Short Story Prize anthology, and most recently by Emergent Literary.  Her debut flash collection, Families and other natural disasters, is available from Reflex Press, and she’s co-edited (with Susmita Battacharya and Farhana Khalique) Flash Fusion an anthology of flash fiction, writing prompts and interviews by and about authors of South Asian Heritage which is due out from Dahlia Publishing.

Who is it for?: 

All underrepresented writers—those who face barriers to opportunities due to mental health challenges, physical health/disability, sensory impairment, learning disabilities, neurodivergence, substance misuse, survivors, working class backgrounds, those from the LGBTQIA+ community, and people of Black, Asian, Traveller, mixed heritage or other global majority backgrounds.

Dates & Time: 

Mondays, 18 & 25 November + 2 & 9 December

6-8 pm

This course takes place online via Zoom. Links will be sent seven days prior to the first session, and again the day of the first session.

Cost: 

£40 / £20 concessions.

In order to make our resources stretch further, we have to subsidise some workshops with nominal fees well below most online courses. The more who book at full price, the more we’ll be able to offer. 

Concessionary places are available for those on benefits, pensioners, unemployed/underemployed or on low wages. We do not ask for proof that you qualify.
